Pet Resolutions

We’re sharing something fun with you today that Victoria Stilwell started.

New Year’s Resolutions…from Lola and Rio.

I had to brainstorm and try to imagine (if Lola and Rio could rationalize) what they would resolve to do better in 2015.

Here’s what I’ve come up with:

#PetResolutions from Lolathepitty.com

Let’s hope the expression on their faces is not an indication of how successful they’ll be.

What are your #PetResolutions? Please share with us on Victoria Stilwell’s site then tag on social media with #PetResolutions!

Peanut Butter Banana + Flax Seed Dog Biscuits - @lolathepitty

Some pretty exciting things happened in 2014. Such as starting this blog.

And I can’t forget rescuing Emma, which was probably one of the biggest highlights of the year.

Then of course there’s that part where I resigned from my career as marketing director to pursue major life goals, which include relocating to my home state of Colorado (just a few weeks away!).

But I wanted to recap some of my favorite blog posts (and yours) over the past year. I found myself discovering posts that even I had forgotten about it. So, here they are…in no particular order.

1. My Dog Bit My Child.

Rio-safety-with-Kids

Ahh, the post that crashed my blog. I’m fairly certain that prior to this post, the only person reading this blog was my mother.

2. Loose Leash Walking Tips

The day I was able to walk Lola on a loose leash without her pulling me down the block was a fabulous day. I suggest the experience.

3. Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treat Recipe

These treats…dogs love ’em. You love them. They are my most viewed recipe and have received many rave reviews!

Seriously, I never thought this post would take off like it did. Five simple ways to advocate for pitties, even if you don’t own one.

p.s. thanks for reading. You truly make my day. Here’s to another great year – happy 2015!

5 Tips for Treating Dog Diarrhea - lolathepitty.com

Sometimes I have to laugh at the text conversations the boyfriend and I have…I mean really, they’re quite romantic:

Me: Morning! Hope your day is going well, how does Rio’s poop look?

BF: Good morning. He didn’t go yet…

Me: Oh, well that’s a good sign! Let me know how it looks when he does go.

BF: He just went poo – it looks much better, mostly solid!

Me: Yay!

#YouKnowYoureADogMomWhenSolidPoopMakesYouHappy

As I was typing out the title to this post I was thinking to myself, “Gross…”. But then I look back at all the times I was in desperate need of advice and was looking for exactly that. Dealing with foster dogs and Lola, who has a very sensitive stomach, we’ve had no shortage of dog diarrhea around here. So here ya go, tips and advice on what to do when your dog has diarrhea.

1. Skip a meal

Give your dog’s systems a chance to flush. Try not to feed anything for at least 12-24 hours.

2. Slowly introduce a bland diet to your dog

After skipping a meal, the next thing I feed my Lola and Rio is a bland meal for at least a couple days. Here’s what we usually make: rice + boiled ground beef + a spoonful of Greek yogurt.

You can also try Rice + boiled chicken (or turkey) + a small amount of pure pumpkin.

3. Pepto Bismol

Seriously. After my vet recommended this, it has been a life (and money) saver. Pepto is something you likely have in your medicine cabinet – and it works. I give Lola and Rio (40-50lbs) a tablespoon or so and serve it right on top of the bland dog food or give it alone. This combined with the above tips has cured many episodes of an upset tummy.

4. Fish Zole

Okay, I won’t lie – when my dogs have had parasites such as giardia, coccidia, or just diarrhea, there isn’t much I wouldn’t have done for a Metronidazole (Flagyl) prescription. It stops diarrhea almost instantly. And yes, we’ve had all of the above. Unfortunately that’s one of the downsides to fostering dogs – but they’re totally worth it.

Well here’s the life-changing news I found out recently: you can buy an over-the-counter product called FISH-ZOLE (found at Petsmart, Walmart…or any fish supply store) which is the prescription Metronidazole (Rx) bottled and labeled for fish tank use. It is a bottle of 250 mg x 100 tablets of Metronidazole.  It’s the same tablets that your Vet will prescribe to you for any parasite or diarrhea issue; same tablets, same color, same size – the same. Here’s the recommended dosage: a 25lb dog should get one 250 mg tablet twice per day, a 50lb dog would get two (500mg) tablets twice per day for a total of 5 days.

5. Slowly re-introduce your dog’s regular diet

After your dog has a chance for their system to calm down, work out whatever was upsetting their GI, slowly re-introduce their normal diet. For Lola and Rio we usually make a big batch of the rice and boiled beef, and give a couple spoonfuls on top of their food for the first couple days back on regular food.

Note: These tips have saved us so many times! However, I’m not a vet nor am I advising you not to see a vet – because anytime we think something is wrong with Lola or Rio, we don’t hesitate to make them an appointment. But sometimes we try a new brand of treats or they eat something they shouldn’t and these simple tips have saved us and made them feel better almost immediately. *If your dog has liquid/water consistency stool vs. pudding type stools, it’s time to contact a vet. Liquid stools could lead very quickly to dehydration.

My Pittied Life: November

My Pittied Life - Lolathepitty.com

November proved to be quite the exciting month… I’ve got some exciting announcements in life de Sarah, so read on!

My Pittied Life - Lolathepitty.com

Mini Rescue Operation

It was a typical Friday night. We had just finished running some errands and went to get a bite to eat. After sitting down with our BBQ sandwiches, I glanced out the window and saw a tiny white dog running through the parking lot – towards the highway.

I watched it for just a moment to see if for some odd reason it had an owner following (knowing this was not likely)…then two seconds later, I popped up out of my seat yelling back to Antonio that I’d be back, “there was a dog I had to get”! Me and my big clunky snow boots ran out the door, (attracting some strange glances on the way) and over to the direction I saw the dog.

I knelt down on the ground, kissed at the dog and watched her trot the other direction. Antonio followed me out the door with a chunk of my sandwich to try and coax the scared pup. At the same time an older couple drove up and asked if it was my dog and I asked them the same. Both resulting in the same answer – no. I asked the gentleman to drive past the dog, who was now heading toward the highway, and get out so that we could hopefully catch the dog or at the very least, direct her the other way.

My Pittied Life - lolathepitty.com

We corralled the dog into a corner of the building and the poor thing appeared to be blind. Knowing there wasn’t much of a choice, I put my gloves on and quickly snatched the dog up. The dog yelped, most likely out of fright, but quickly calmed down. I told the older couple that I would take care of finding the owner and getting this pup back home safe.

Antonio had ran back into the restaurant to grab my purse and the car keys and luckily the dog was wearing an id tag with a phone number! The first time we tried calling – no answer. The second time – an answer! An elderly woman answered the phone and I told her I had a fluffy white dog in front of me. She was delighted and asked where she was found. Five minutes later, this woman drove down to pick up her 14 year old blind, and mostly deaf dog.

Talk about being in the right place at the right time!

The BIG News

In August (was it August? Yep.) I resigned from my marketing job of nearly five years. It was one of the biggest decisions of my life. But it was time – time to focus on me and move forward. And it was one of the best decisions I’ve made.

The first couple months went by, sluggishly and the couple promising job interviews proved not to be.

But something exciting happened recently and I’ve been questioning whether to share immediately or wait a while…oh well, here it goes:

I recently accepted a job with a marketing company.

A marketing company that just so happens to have a dog as it’s logo.

I mean, how perfect is that?

A marketing company where I’ll be working alongside Lola and Rio most of the day.

A marketing company in Colorado.

We’re moving! Moving back home.

Buh-bye Minnesota. It’s been nice (and cold), but it’s time.

I’m going miss the connections and friends we’ve made here but I’m excited. I’ll miss my horseback riding buddy, my dog friends, my rescue connections, our flyball team, our favorite places to take the dogs to play, and my mother (Lola and Rio’s grandma), but I’m ecstatic about the future.

We’ll keep you posted on the move!

 Kennel Cough Sucks

Oh, Rio. You’ve been healthy (minus the $2,500 surgery) for almost an entire year… so I guess we were due –  kennel cough got the best of him. Luckily, we had a vet appointment made for his one-year shots and what not so we had them check out the coughing. Didn’t seem to effect him all too much though and I’m just glad Lola never caught it! Sick dogs are no fun. But I’ll definitely take kennel cough over giardia or any other intestinal parasite. Yikes.

Holiday Gift Guides

We had two fabulous gift guides that I posted in November. One is a gift guide for dog lovers and one is specifically for all my “pibble” lovers. But of course, they kind of carry over into one another.

Plus, I already want to frame the cover of the 2015 calendar, so I might need to get it just for that. Mom…dad? Details for ordering below, *wink, wink*.

Ginger Apple Dog Treat Recipe

A typical Saturday at our house lately has been sleeping in until about 9 a.m., brewing a fresh pot of Grounds & Hounds coffee, hopping on the computer to catch up on emails and blog stuff then running the dogs over to a friend’s house or the park to run off ‘the crazies’.

Well, those Saturdays have been modified a bit. The whole going to the park hasn’t happened the past few Saturdays because it’s been downright COLD.

Ginger Apple Dog Treat Recipe - lolathepitty.com

I promise I will not ramble on and on about how lovely depressing the winter months are here in Minnesota (in this post).

But speaking of cold I saw a poster online that read, “The air hurts my face. Why am I living somewhere where the air hurts my face?”. I had to share and chuckle.

But we’re not talking about that, we’re talking about dog treats – sheesh. But not just any dog treats. Fancy ones with ginger and ooples.

And a very willing model.

Ginger Apple Dog Treat Recipe - lolathepitty.com

If I would’ve zoomed out, this photo would be quite hilarious. Lola is standing off to the side wondering why she can’t be the paw model (and quite frankly, gobble up all the treats). And Rio is wondering why his feet have to be touching this strange piece of wood while holding a “relax” position for way too long after being tempted by the smells of freshly baked treats. Thanks, Rio – you were such a good boy!

If you’re wondering why Lola’s paws weren’t used, to be truthful, her nails needed trimming. #dogmomproblems

Holiday Gift Guide For Dog Lovers: 2014

Lola the Pitty's Holiday Gift Guide for Dog Lovers!

Lola the Pitty's Holiday Gift Guide for Dog Lovers!

If you’re like me, come mid-November you are wandering aimlessly around TJ Maxx and Macy’s looking for gifts, only to find stuff for yourself. Happens. Every. Time.

So I’m here to save you from buying pumpkin spiced body lotion, candles and whatever other good-for-anyone-gift and get the dog lover on your list something that they’ll love. And use.

I’ve spent a lot of time finding companies and products that are making a difference in their communities, have awesome products, and that I love. I think you will, too. Enjoy!

1. KAE-O Clothing

Lola the Pitty's Holiday Gift Guide for Dog Lovers!

Born From Love. Driven By Passion. Fighting for Life.”

Lola the Pitty's Holiday Gift Guide for Dog Lovers - Pit Bull Mom T-shirt

KAE-O is fighting against the abuse and abandonment of pit bulls by donating 25% of its proceeds to their current non profit partner (currently Karma Rescue in California).

If their mission isn’t enough to persuade you, their amazingly comfy and stylish clothing will. Because we’ve all bought that Gildan cardboard t-shirt that while yes, a portion of the proceeds went to a good cause, is never going to be worn. Not with their clothes! The ‘Save a Life’ hoodie I’m wearing in the photo is seriously my favorite sweatshirt, hands down.

2. Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co.

Lola the Pitty's Holiday Gift Guide for Dog Lovers - Grounds & Hounds Coffee

Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co. was started by Jordan Karcher, who just so happens to be a rescue dog owner himself.  The company was born out of his passion to give back to the animals by offering delicious coffee – two of the most important things in my life!

Fair trade, organic coffee company where 20% of all revenue received is donated to rescue groups. Pretty awesome.  And coming from a coffee snob, I’m confident in saying that you’ll love their coffee.

Even Lola and Rio approve.

3. Woo Woo Workshop ID Tags

Lola the Pitty's Holiday Gift Guide for Dog Lovers - Woo Woo Workshop Dog Accessories

I’ve been swooning over these dog tags for quite a while after finding them on Etsy. And after getting to know owner and founder, Melissa, I knew it was a company I’d proudly stand behind. Their customer service is top-notch, their designs are amazing, and they are very reasonably priced!

Check out the full line of unique, artisan, pet oriented id tags & accessories from Woo Woo Workshop!

And trust me, we have definitely heard our fair share of the “woo woo” song!

4. Great books for dog lovers!

Lola the Pitty's Holiday Gift Guide for Dog Lovers - Great books to buy

If you haven’t read the story of Wallace the pit bull you’re missing out. This book will have you laughing, tearing up, and cheering Wallace on in every chapter. Pit bull advocates and dog lovers alike will enjoy this amazing true story of an underdog who rose to the top, becoming one of the most influential pit bulls in history!

*For a $25 donation to Wallace the Pit Bull Foundation, you will receive a Wallace book, pawtographed with Wallace’s paw stamp! Each book is hand stamped from an image of Wallace’s actual paw print taken on the day he passed. Purchase on WallaceThePitBull.com!

If there’s anyone that has a magnificent way with words it’s Ken Foster, author of I’m a Good Dog. His insight, intelligence and stories will move you beyond words. Fellow pit bull lovers, this book is a true gift; one that should be given and received.

*Purchase I’m a Good Dog by Ken Foster through Amazon.com.

 5. Pet Subscription Box

barkbox-code

Subscription boxes just might be taking over the world and for good reason: they are a darn good idea. I mean, who doesn’t like to get packages in the mail? I feel like a giddy nine year old waiting for a package to come – so knowing that something for my dogs would be coming every month (and what’s inside is a surprise!), is a perfect gift.

I personally recommend BarkBox – they are a great company who believes in giving back (they’re a sponsor for the Monster Holiday Drive we are participating in and will donate one box to our drive for every subscription)! This box is guaranteed to brighten you and your dog’s day when it arrives at your doorstep each month!

6. Spot Farms Treats

Lola the Pitty's Holiday Gift Guide for Dog Lovers - Spot Farms Treats

These aren’t your average bag of dog treats, people; these are more like the filet mignon of dog treats. I’m kind of picky about what goes in our dogs mouths if you haven’t already noticed. And there’s no doubt that they eat cleaner and healthier than I do. Check out our review of Spot Farms treats from earlier in 2014!

We love that Spot Farms offers human grade treats made using the very best antibiotic-free meats from farm families across the U.S. You won’t find any fillers such as corn, wheat or soy in their treats!

“We make sure our treats are chock full of things that are good for your dog, like antioxidant-rich cranberries and Omega-3–rich flaxseeds.” -Spot Farms

Find Spot Farms dog treats at Petco, Wag.com and too many other places to list, ha. Check out their site for the deets.

7. Homemade Dog Biscuits

If you have the time and you’re looking for a small thoughtful gift to hand out to a handful of friends, homemade dog treat recipes are totally fun to make (and cost effective)! Get creative and package them in cute little bags. Here are a couple of my favorite treats that would package well:

Mint Buckwheat Dog Biscuits

Homemade Mint Buckwheat Dog Biscuits

Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats

Peanut butter Banana + Flax seed dog biscuits

8. Toys & Fashion

Just a few of our favorite toys that I know your pups will love! And the monkey hoodie – totally adorable!!!

Lola the Pitty's Holiday Gift Guide for Dog Lovers

a. Jolly Ball – ever since we found this toy, we can’t keep Lola or Rio away from it!

b. Kong Wobbler Food and Treat Dispensing Dog Toy – entertainment galore.

c. Monkey Hoodie by Chilly Dog – the ears on this hoodie make it over-the-top cute!

d. Chuck-It. a.k.a. your best friend if your dog obsesses over tennis balls as ours do.

There ya have it, we hope you love these ideas as much as we do!

Keep your eyes peeled for a pit bull lovers’ specific gift guide, as I’ve got plenty of ideas up my sleeve.

Meet Oliver: an Outstanding Adoptable Dog in NJ

Meet Oliver! Adoptable dog from NJ - w/ Eleventh Hour Rescue.

Last week we received a comment on our Facebook page from a page named “Outstanding Oliver”. Here’s what it read:

“Hi Lola – I’m Oliver! I read your story and you sure are lucky to be saved and living in your forever home. I was a stray, I was starving and Eleventh Hour Rescue saved me from deathrow and helped me heal. I am still waiting for my forever home and have been living in the kennel for two years now. I have wonderful volunteer friends who love me and take such good care of me but what I would really like is a family. Perhaps you can help me by sharing my page and story? I would be so grateful!”

Well, I thought we could do a little better than that and dedicate an entire blog post to Outstanding Oliver.

Quick Facts:

Located in Morris County, NJ // Good with kids // Good with dogs & cats // 6-7 years old

Oliver was extremely emaciated and sick with a lingering kennel cough. But that was nothing that a little lot of TLC from the amazing people at EHR could give and they slowly nursed Oliver back to health. However, he’s still waiting for his perfect family to spend the rest of his life with. Please consider sharing Oliver’s story so he can find a family to call his own.

Here’s a little more about this cutie:

“My dedicated volunteer friends make sure that I get out of the kennel a lot. We go to fun places like the park, agility classes each week, on hikes, Dairy Queen, and they even take me home for visits sometimes!

I love to go for rides in the car. You should see my tail wag when I get to sit in the front seat! And if you pet me while you’re driving- boy, am I in heaven! I like to go on walks and I try not to pull on the leash because I know that people don’t like that. In fact, I enjoy taking time to stop and smell the roses and you may have to pull me a little bit to get me to go! There is just so much to explore – we didn’t have all those great scents in New York!

I like to play in the yards at the kennel too. My favorite is when I bow down low to the ground and then pounce up and run around, watching if you’re going to follow me. Sometimes I get to have play dates with some of my kennel friends. I enjoy being around other dogs and I am very mellow with them.

I’m great in a home environment; I just like to relax and be with you! My volunteer friends I’m so loving, loyal, and goofy – whatever that means!

While I don’t like to live in the past, some things are hard to leave behind. Have you ever been so hungry that your body starts to eat itself? I have and it’s a hard feeling to forget. When I see food in front of me now, I sometimes forget that I will never have to worry about having enough food again. I only ask that you don’t touch my food or food bowl after you’ve fed me. I am currently working with a fantastic trainer who knows my past and needs, and is helping my volunteer friends work with me. I will need a loving owner who will be understanding of this and willing to follow plans set in place by my trainer.”

*Oliver is good with kids, but it is recommend he only go to a home with older, respectful children because of the specific training protocols in place that younger kids might not be able to follow. The rescue would really like to see Oliver find a home in the NJ/NY/PA area.

Learn more about Oliver on his adoption page!

My Pittied Life: October

The sun is now setting before five p.m. The temps are dropping (a little too quickly for my liking), almost all the leaves have fallen and November is here.

October definitely sped by, but we packed in a TON of activities into those 31 days.

Let’s see, where shall I begin?

My Pittied Life - Lolathepitty.com

The Search Is On

As many of you know, I resigned from my full time marketing job a couple months back to make a couple of my life goals a reality. Well, I may finally have an opportunity that may be pretty promising. Still too many unknowns to make a big announcement, but I’ll hopefully have more news to share in the next series of ‘My Pittied Life’!

Milestones
It was a pretty exciting month in the social media world for Lola the Pitty. Our Facebook page has surpassed 5K fans (and we have never once paid for ads or sponsored posts)! Plus, we now have over 1K followers on Instagram and Pinterest! Not too shabby for a blog that was started less than a year ago. Thank you so much to all of our friends and supporters!

Awesome Play Dates

We know the days are getting shorter and the weeks (ok, months) where no one even wants to step foot outside are coming up fast! Therefore, we took full advantage of the beautiful autumn and made trip after trip to the hockey rink, aka our personal dog park. And today, we drove down to Mankato where we met up with a few friends for a play date at The Paw!

Monster Holiday Drive

We’ve been sharing, unpacking, organizing, sorting, and tearing down boxes from all of the awesome donations we’ve received for this great fundraiser. Please consider donating to help homeless animals in need! Learn more: Lola and Tater’s Monster Holiday Drive.

We asked our fans - "What Do You Love Most About YOUR Pit Bull" - here's what they said. lolathepitty.com

After a recent post, 15 Things My Dog Has Taught Me, it sparked the question, “What do you love most about your dog…your pit bull?”. So I set out to our loyal Facebook fans and asked them what they love most about their pit bulls. I absolutely loved reading the responses and seeing how much joy our dogs bring to our lives, regardless of breed.

Here’s what our friends had to say!

Her Love, loyalty, and kisses” – Cassie M.

I love her kindness and play bows when greeting new dogs – still, at 15 years old. I love her snoring and her happy talking when she rolls around on her back after a nap. I love how she will sit for photographs, but dislikes looking at the camera. I love how she trusts me 100%.” – Sherrie S.

Their unconditional love!! Life is better with a four-legged furbaby!!” – Ashley T.

“Love and companionship without judgment” – Rachelle C.

They all have such different personalities! I love Lili’s way of getting my attention. She’s subtle, but relentless. I love her playful, happy, bouncing spirit. I love how Rufus is the guardian of the group. He wants to be where I am, he’s my best buddy, he’s everyone’s best friend, and he’s so incredibly sweet, mellow and charming. I love Kane’s sass and attitude, because underneath it all is this giant, playful mama’s boy. I love Kane’s ability to say “mama”. He’s my talker! And then there’s Simon… I love his eyebrows, his underbite, and his zest for life. He’s all eyes and all ears all the time. I love how he’s so desperate to try to learn new tricks, and how he throws out all of his tricks when I’m trying to teach him something new. I love how all of them snuggle, and how sweet and charming they all are.” – Stephanie W.

“I love everything about this girl!” – Corey B.

I love her because she’s totally goofy! Always cheerful. ” – Jeanine L.

I love Jack’s playfulness, his loyalty, his kissable face…” – Stephanie L.
