"Monster" Elf Drive - collecting donated items for dogs & cats in need!

We are so excited to be participating in the “Monster” Holiday Drive! Have you heard of it? The drive is an amazingly successful campaign organized by the minds behind the organization, I’m Not a Monster.

Basically, all of the ‘elves’ (aka Lola, Tater Tot and a ton of other dogs) work hard to gather donation items for dogs in need! It’s pretty awesome to say the least.

The initiative was inspired by toys on clearance. They sat unwanted, not unlike the pets waiting at the shelters. The pets and toys are not broken; they just haven’t found their perfect home yet. So to help as many homeless pets as possible, they recruit “Monster” Elves to gather items; so not only we lift their spirits, but also bring attention to the good shelters and the various causes they represent.

[Tweet “Being in a shelter is not fun for any pets. Together, we can make a difference! www.lolathepitty.com/monster-holiday-drive/ #monsterholidaydrive”]

Check out the 2013 totals. Holy cow.

For the 2014 drive, we’ve teamed up with our friend Tater Tot and his girl, Amaya! We’ve got a pretty good start (thanks to Amaya’s awesome effort) but every item helps. 100% of the items collected will be donated to Heading Home K9 Rescue and Across America Boxer Rescue.

Please consider donating by purchasing an item or two on Tater and Lola’s Amazon Wish List to help dogs & cats in need.

Thank you for your support!

We can learn so much from our dogs…

Our dogs don’t hold grudges, they don’t judge us, and they love us no matter what.

In fact, we just bought a framed print the other day:

Things We Learn From our Dogs - lolathepitty.com

But of course there’s more than that. Here are 15 things I’ve learned from my dog, a pit bull:

1. Daycare isn’t just for kids

2. Whining actually does work at times

3. Do something fun every day

4. Sometimes all you need is a nap

5. Trust your gut

6. It’s okay to pee outside (as long as no one’s watching)

7. King beds are the best to sleep on

8. Snuggling is one of the best things, ever

9. Kisses are to be used sparingly and only for those you really love (Rio has yet to learn this one)

10. Be thankful for anyone that feeds you

11. Sunshine = happiness

12. Roam & explore at every opportunity

13. Be yourself

14. Don’t judge

15. Live in the moment

5 Ways to Advocate for Pit Bulls: October is Pit Bull Awareness Month

Five Ways to Advocate for Pit Bulls - lolathepitty.com
Five Ways to Advocate for Pit Bulls - lolathepitty.com

October: a great month if you ask me. An entire month dedicated to raising awareness for pit bulls. Also – Pit Bull Awareness Day is October 25th!

While this is no different really than any month around this household, it is a great opportunity to spotlight pit bulls by educating, promoting adoption, responsible ownership and much more.

One of the things I’ve noticed which we inherit as a responsible pit bull owner: having to advocate for our dogs. We don’t necessarily choose it, but more or less fall into it. At one point or another, we will be presented with a situation where we have to stand up for our dog. Even though, as fellow pit bull owners know our dog is just a dog.

Here I’ve compiled five awesome, positive ways to advocate for pit bulls:

1. Share positive stories about pit bulls

Sites such as the Best Friends Animal Society, Huffington Post, several animal rescue pages, Lolathepitty.com (wink, wink) often publish stories about pit bulls in a positive light. You don’t necessarily have to point out “Hey look! It’s a pit bull doing something positive”, but more along the lines of, this is a really awesome or touching story and hey, the dog just so happens to be a “pit bull”.

2. Allow your dog to do the talkin’

Bring your (willing) breed ambassador to dog-friendly events and stores. Your presence and behavior will speak volumes for itself without saying a peep. Actions generally speak louder than words. But of course, if anyone asks about your pibble, feel free to proudly brag like any parent would.

3. Do Your Research

Before you see a post somewhere on social media that sets you off, think before you type (or talk). Let’s educate ourselves and become well informed advocates. The Unexamined Dog has a great article on ways to advocate for “pit bulls” and if you haven’t previously, check out Drayton Michaels.

4. Raise Positive Awareness with Gear

Yes, gear. For example, display a “My Pit Bull is Family” magnet on your car or wear a shirt that promotes pit bulls in a positive light – just a couple examples.

5. Make Friends

Neighbors, people you meet at the dog park or events, family, coworkers – these are all people that you may interact with on a fairly regular basis. Without even thinking, you are advocating for your dog by sharing pictures, positive experiences and best of all, having them meet your dog. Many people have neutral feelings about “pit bulls” but I can tell you that I personally have changed opinions of a few that would have otherwise “never trusted a pit bull”. Every positive experience makes a difference.

Let’s admit, we’ve all been at that point with a dog where we are frustrated and confused. With Lola, I have felt this way many times. She was our first dog (not counting childhood dogs) and besides being ridiculously easy to potty train, she has challenged us with everything else. Rio has been the ‘easy’ dog and generally listens and picks up on things very quick.

Not that Lola is a bad dog. No, not at all. She doesn’t chew, doesn’t destroy things (besides stuffies and her toys) and is really one of the most loving dogs. Our issues: she doesn’t have a reliable recall. At all. She has a little bit of a ‘barking at unnecessary things’ issue. And as Antonio puts it, she can be a little bit of a burra at times.

To say Lola has kept me on my toes as her handler would not be an understatement. She’s tricky, because if you put her in an obedience class she has one of the most reliable recalls of all the dogs. And it makes sense: run to mom when called (versus strange people that I don’t know) and get rewarded with awesome treats – no problemo! Now put flyball practice into the situation and it becomes a game. Or insert a squirrel or rabbit into the scenario and you won’t get that reliable “come” until the object is out of sight.

“We’ve tried everything and nothing is working.”

Have you ever caught yourself saying that?

It’s easy, really easy to become frustrated, lose hope and push the issue aside using the excuse that it’s the dog’s fault. But what if it isn’t the dog? Maybe we just need to try harder, try differently, try understanding…Training and learning is an ongoing process as a dog owner, as a human being. And I notice that when I start to slack in my duties as a dog owner, it reflects in Lola and Rio.

She wasn’t purposely being stubborn as I just assumed she was – I was misguiding her. I was her biggest obstacle in training.

So maybe it’s not that your dog is stubborn, unwilling and just doing it out of spite. I believe that once we begin to realize this and make the change, that we’ll start noticing a difference. I don’t blame Lola’s recall issues on her – we as her owners have not practiced as we should nor have we set her up to succeed.

Lola was capable, Lola is capable. She just needs the right tools presented to her in a clear manner that she understands. Dogs generally want to please you and earn your acceptance and they will work hard to do so. But we have to make sure we are enabling them to succeed. And if we are continually rewarding them (in their minds) with the things we don’t want, why should we expect change?

Pumpkin Spice Puppuccinos

I was taking a long walk with Lola and Rio and began brainstorming new blog post ideas. I always find it best to step away from the chaos of the television and computer to clear my head and allow my thoughts to transform.

And since pumpkin-everything is in full force I wanted to do some sort of recipe involving it – for our four-legged friends of course. Well, I thought of the perfect use for it!

Pumpkin Puppuccinos. Yes, you read that right.

*Homemade* Pumpkin Spice Puppuccinos! Love this easy recipe for your pooch! Via lolathepitty.com

How to make Puppuccinos:

-Walk into Starbucks wearing your “All I want to do is drink coffee, save pit bulls and take naps” t-shirt.

-Chat with the cashier about said t-shirt.

-Order a latte for yourself.

-Ask kindly if you could have a few sample cups for a dog recipe that you are going to make for your blog.

-Smile when the cashier gives you a weird look and says, “Ummm, sure!” and hands you several sample-sized (adorable) Starbucks cups.

-Come home, break out the blender, a few ingredients and VOILA.

Even better yet, if you have your own small cups, those would work great as well. Trust me, if I didn’t need to take photos of these, they would’ve ended up in the scattered assortment of little ramekins I have.

Otherwise these are great frozen as well! Simply pour mixture into ice cube tray (filling about halfway) and give as a yummy snack (TIP: these are great stuffed into a Kong)!

Enough jibber jabber, onto the real how-to:

10 Gift Ideas for Those Who Have Lost a Dog

Gift Ideas for those who have lost a dog or pet. Lolathepitty.com

It’s never an easy time when you personally or someone you know has lost a pet. I went through this not too long ago with a friend and have gone through it with my childhood dogs. I’m still convinced Lola and Rio are living until they’re at least 30 years old, you with me?

So the question that always arises, “What should I get them?”

With my friend, I wanted it to be a thoughtful memorial for her dog without being something that she would’ve likely purchased herself (such as an urn).

Here are several ideas that I hope will help you when you know a pet who has crossed ‘the rainbow bridge’:

stepping-stone-pet-memorial ONE – Pet Memorial Stone

I personally love this idea – it is such a great memorial idea that will work for anyone – male or female. Whether placed in your yard, garden (or anywhere you please) it is something that will last a lifetime.

 FOUR – Pet Memorial Necklace

This is actually one of the gifts that I gave a friend. This is a great idea because you can customize the charms and personalize it with their initial. And this necklace is actually something that I would wear on a daily basis.

EIGHT – Friendship Glass Balls

These are on the higher end of the price scale, but what a neat idea! The ashes are actually incorporated into the glass – another gift that would last a lifetime.

Other Memorial Gift Ideas

  • Plant a tree in your dog’s name – a lasting tribute to your beloved dog.
  • Fill a dog memorial keepsake box with mementos and personalized dog items
  • Create a gift bag with several smaller items. Many dog gifts can be found at stores such as TJ Maxx/HomeGoods and online at Etsy.com.

A few weeks ago, I bought baking ingredients to make macaroons. Well, I didn’t want to leave Lola and Rio out so I whipped up these puppies…haha (pun intended).

This may be one of my favorite dog treat recipes I’ve made…

I’m seriously considering adding a little sugar and more moisture to the batter and baking another batch for myself – they were that good. Regardless, I may or may not have ate about 5 of these myself.

These blueberry dog treats are a slightly chewy, slightly crisp (tiny) cookie that I broke in half and fed as a little treat to Lola and Rio.

I’ll be honest, my dogs aren’t really the best judge of flavor – Rio’s favorite snack, if he were to choose, would be sticks. And Lola, well…fairly certain she’s never tasted anything she’s eaten in her life as she literally inhales all food. So you can just trust me on this one – these are awesome.

My Pittied Life: August

Welcome to another edition of our “pittied” lives. These months just keep passing me by…

My Pittied Life - Lolathepitty.com

Besides Googling things such as “how to express your dogs anal glands”, August was a fairly exciting month.

Well, in my life – not so much the dogs’ lives. Their lives are pretty consistent and really just vary on how many times they make it to the park that week.

Photo Shoot

I am in love with this photo of the four of us! These three make my life complete. Big thanks to my friend, Stephanie of YBF Photo for the awesome photo shoot.

Resigning…

I made a big decision. A life changing decision. On August 15th, I resigned from my full-time position as a Marketing Director. It was time to put myself first, move on and accomplish my life goals. I can’t say too much yet, but I’ll be sure to keep everyone posted as I’m excited for the future.

And to be honest – I’m a little scared at the same time.

Park Time!

The weather (for once) has been awesome and so we’ve been taking advantage of park time with the pups.

Fairly certain I love the Minnehaha park as much as the dogs do…

Hiking trails, river access, off leash park = happy us and pups.

Lola and Rio usually leave looking like this: sand filled, wet, and dirty.

Blog Life:

Besides entertaining the two mutts, working on a couple web design projects, and working (yes, I had two jobs prior), I usually spend my nights parked on the couch with a laptop close by.
